58 structures demolished in Kalewadi

TOI PUNE: The anti-encroachment unit of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has demolished 58 properties in Kalewadi in the last two days to widen the Kalewadi Phata-Dehu Alandi bus rapid transit (BRT) road. The civic body is constructing a 14.5km-long and 45m-wide road from Kalewadi Phata to Dehu Alandi Road as a BRT corridor. Nearly 184 properties are in the way of the corridor.

The owners of the properties in Vijaynagar, Kalewadi, who were affected by the road work had approached the high court. They said the civic body shifted the road by 40m because of which the properties would have to be razed. The owners said they had obtained a stay on the demolitions.

Civic officials said the PCMC demolished 18 structures on Thursday and 40 on Friday. The local residents said the civic body had conducted the demolition drive in haste.

They said they had pleaded with civic officials not to demolish their houses as their case was scheduled to be heard in the high court on Friday.

Municipal commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi said, "The high court had earlier vacated the stay in 2012 but the civic body had not carried out the demolition work because of the municipal elections. The local residents again approached the high court and obtained a stay on the demolition of the properties. However, the high court vacated the stay last week. The civic anti-encroachment squad planned to raze the affected houses last Saturday, but they could not carry out the work as the residents demanded a copy of the high court order. We received the copy of the order on Monday evening

." tnn We conducted the demolition drive on Thursday under police bandobast and continued the action on Friday."
