Torana
is one of the most highest forts in Maharashtra. It is to the right of
Sinhagad. Torana is
also called as 'Prachandagad' because
it is a wide spread fort. Because it had a lot of 'Toran trees' on it, people started calling
it Torana. It is one of the most toughest forts to
climb and tests each trekker. When Shivaji conquered this fort he found 22
pots full of gold coins in it, this wealth he used in building Rajgad fort
on the 'Muramba Devi' mountain.
Torna has lots to view. Devi Mengai a very old temple is of religious importance over here. Rajgad can be seen from this temple. From the fort itself one can see other forts like Raigad, Pratapgad, Rajgad and Sinhagad. When coming from Velhe you cross first Bini and then the Kothi Darwaja. Not very far from the doors are the temples of Torneshwar and Toranaji. Konkan Darwaja, Hanuman Buruj and Bhel Buruj are places to see on this fort. |
