Dhanraj Pillay | ||||||
Dhanraj made his international debut in 1986 Asia Cup in Delhi and has won almost all the honours that the game offers. He has been in the Olympic team for 1996 (Atlanta), 1992 (Barcelona). Ajitpal Singh, who led India to her only World Cup hockey victory in 1975, rates Dhanraj amongst the greatest ever centre forwards of the contemporary hockey. Dhanraj as a captain scored 10 goals in the Bangkok tournament where India won the title, these ten goals are considered his best in one meet. The Indian Hockey Federation (I.H.F.) unlike the Cricket board does not keep a detailed record of players, Dhanraj can recall it as more than 170 goals, but a hockey statistician insists it is closer to 130. He is a first-class player in a sport that receives second class treatment. In 1998 he led India to an Asian Games gold medal for the first time in 32 years, scoring 10 goals. Awards won by Dhanraj Pillay : Arjuna Puraskar (1995) |
