*Cast: Ashish Chowdhry, Isha Koppikar and Amrita Arora.
Can lesbianism be a must-watch thing for Indian audiences? Have any Indian film ever put such question before you? Here is a film that promises to shake the values and cash registers in one go. Produced by Pammi Baweja, 'Girlfriend' is written-directed by Karan Razdan of 'Hawas' fame. The director's penchant for shock treatment takes a new turn with the film as he explores the forbidden territory of same sex attraction
Story:The story is all about Amrita-Isha fire. Amrita and Isha are childhood friend. Quiet natural. But as they grow up and their sexual identity start grooming, Isha becomes obsessive about Amrita. Society often identifies it as gay act, and it is needless to say that in indian society lesbian peoples are still hatred. Any way in between these two girlfriends, Ashish Chowdhry comes in. Ashish approaches Amrita. Amrita smiles. Ashish-Amrita becomes sweetheart for each other. But Isha, who is very possessive of Amrita does not want to let them get together. Amrita is helpless. She is caught in between her childhood friend Isha and later found lover boy Ashis Chowdhry. The story moves towards climax. Which side Amrita will take? Will Isha be revangeful to keep Amrita separate from Ashish? All questions, better you find the answers on silver screen.
Music: Considering that director Karan Razdan’s ‘Girlfriend’ is based on the theme of a girl’s obsession for another girl, the movie’s music, full of love duets and seductive numbers, comes as a bit of a surprise. This film starting with a seductive number 'Thodi Tumse Shararat', it is quite a hummable song, which sounds seductive only when seen on screen due to Isha's hot antics. Kumar Sanu reminds of his vintage form when he sings the solo 'Tere Chehre Se Nazar'.Yet another song 'Hamara Dil', written by Anwar Sagar, is from the Anu Malik school of music and is another good love song that should be publicized soon for better sales of the album. 'Suno To Jaana Jaana' is a hip-hop rhythmic song that is high on beats and is a sudden shift from the earlier three songs that focused on melody. 'Bheegi Bheegi' is completely opposite and is a seductive number which is slow in theme but picks up momentum intermediately with both Shaan and Sowmya Raoh raising the tempo of the number after a couple of lines each.
Performance: Ishaa Koppikar is simply superb in her new avatar. She depicted the gay-act even better than a gay people. Amrita Arora is helpless. Except being an amusing stuff, she has nothing to do with that script. Aashish Chaudhury is all right.
Overall 'Girlfriend' is a film, based on lezbianism with a psychological background. It is not very new in Indian cinema. But the way, it showed it's promos was simply seductive. Althaugh, Karan Razdan has denied the titillating property of the film, but it needs not to say that the scenes between Ishaa and Amrita are quite erotic and sizzling. From this point of view, it has some chances to hit the bull's eye.
