S.R.PATEL AGIARY

1843 - 2001 SARDAR SORABJI RATANJI PATEL
In the year 1843, a well known Parsi inhabitant of Poona contributed his personal wealth to construct, what is the present Agiary, on Roj. Behram, Mah. Adar 1212 Yz.

With the recommendation of the Bombay Parsi Panchayat, a worthy Dastur From Navasri from the Jamasp Asha family was selected by Seth Sorabji Patel to be the first Dastur of a Dabgah, later in 1843 A.D converted into Adaran-Saheb.

Dastur Jamaspji Edulji Dastur son of Dastur Edulji Bomanji of Navasri was chosen by Seth Sorabji R. Patel to be the first High Priest Of the Parsses in Deccan and functioned for the Dabgah from 1824 to 1846 when the Adaran-Saheb was just formed. He was a Scholar of Zend Avasta and Pahalvi.

On his death in 1846, his son, Dastur Noshirwan Jamaspji was installed and for 38 years functioned as the High Priest. he was also as able and learned as his father and had to his credit the rebuilding of Agiary at his own expenses and also constructing The Patel hall, both of which were declared open 6th June 1867. he was the first member of the Jamasp Dastur family to be given the hereditary title of Sardar Dastur by lord Napier in 1873 and made a Khan Bahadur for his services to the community. Being of an amiable nature he was loved and cherished by all communities.

On Sardar Dastur Khan Bahadur Noshirwan's death in 1884, his younger brother, Hoshang Jamaspji was installed as Sardar Dastur. Dasturji Noshirwan was also a master of Zend Avesta and Pahalvi. A scholar of Sanskrit, Marathi, English, German, Hebrew and Latin. Also assisted as Professor of Oriental languages in The Deccan College and was the first Parsi to be appointed Examiner for University Examinations. He also received the title of Khan Bahadur in 1864 and earned a Doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1890 and awarded a title of Shams Ul Ulema. As a member of Poona Municipal Corporation for eight years, he was conferred the CIE as well. The community lost a great scholar and personality when he died in 1908.

The 4th Dastur to succeed was Sardar Dastur Shams Ul Ulema Khan Bahadur Kaikobad. He was also a scholar in Persian And Sanskrit and mastered the Avesta and Pahlavi and was awarded the PhD from USA. he died in January 1927.

The  5th Dastur installed in 1927 was his son, Dastur Noshirwan who schooled at St. Vincent and later  Xavier College in Bombay. He studied the Avesta and Pahalvi language. Prior to his being installed as High Priest in 1927 in Poona, Dastur Noshirwan was the Dastur in Mhow from 1913. In 1947 Dastur Noshirwan was installed as High Priest of Bombay as well. Dastur Noshirwan died in February 1949 and was succeeded by his only son, the Present high Priest installed on 24th February 1949 --- Sardar Dastur Hormazdiar Dastur.

With 36 Diocese under him, he also the president of the Dastur Schools Trust and Trustee of the Parsi Modi Colony and Buzme Behram. A Graduate from Bombay University he is the Managing Trustee of The Sorabji Patel Agiary.

The Patel Agiary, as you see it, which in the mid 19th century was an area where community members surrounded it, is now devoid of them and the Agiary stands isolated in an over crowed area of Poona. The Trustees are therefore keen to consider alternatives to this location and considering setting up a center for Zoroastrian Religions Studies --- besides housing the Dare-Mehr, in easy reach of the community members and in keeping with the traditions status of this premier religious undertaking.

With dwindling resources and mounting cost of maintenance and repair, as can be expected, 158 years has taken the tool of this historic structure. With the help and dedication of Trustees, members of the community have rallied to the institutions support. A sum of Rs._______ has been raised and spent in these few months and you will be pleased to see a better preserved appearance of the Dare-Meher that what you may have observed prior to renovation.

The Managing Trustee and his colleagues are grateful to all who have supported and contributed to this worth cause.

Its the zeal in the welfare of the community and in education that the Dastur Family established the Dastur Noshirwan Girl's high School which celebrated its 100th Anniversary on 1/2/93. In 1912 the Dastur Hoshang Boys' High School was established. Both these Institutions though established for the furthering of education for the children of Zoroastrian Faith, have always provided the facility to all, irrespective of caste, creed or status.

Sardar Dastur Hormazdiar Dastur is the President of the Board of Management of the Dastur School Trust and devotes his zeal and time in furthering the aims and objects of his illustrious family for the welfare of the community and its education
