Purushottam Laxman Deshpande the name which brings a smile to the face of any Marathi reader. P. L. Deshpande was joyful personality of Maharastra.

Every member craves to recount one P L joke or a scene from his plays, one-man shows, films, books or whatever. He is an integrated part of Marathi Literature.

 


Some of his One-Act-Plays The thing which took Pu La to the pinnacle of popularity  is his one -act-shows. ' Batatyachi Chal ' which was based on his own book ' Batatyachi Chal ' was his first one act play which was a roaring success. Other show ' Asa Mee Asami ' got excellent response.Same thing with 'Hasavinyacha Majha Dhanda'. 'Varyavarchi Varat' was again a great family success.

Pu La Deshpande in Theater - Drama

     P. L. Deshpande stared his career in Dramas and Plays by writing ' Tuka Mhane Ata ' projecting Sant Tukaram in ' revolutionary way'. Some of his dramas are 'Tujhe Ahe Tujpashi', 'Sundar Mee Honar', 'Tee Phularani', 'Teen Paishacha Tamasha', 'Ek Jhunj Varyashi', etc... He wrote plays for children 'Vayam Motham Khotam' and ' Nave Gokul'.

Pu. La. And Music

      Pu La provided able accompaniment on harmonium to several renowned vocalists like Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, the late Vasantrao Deshpande, and Mallikarjun Mansoor.He took lessons in harmonium from Dattopant Rajopadhye at Bhaskar Sangeetalay.With the knowledge of music,Pu La also gave musical hits from devotion songs like '`Indrayani kathi,'  to natyageet , to songs for children such as ' Nach Re Mora'.His harmonium cassettes became a part of his household.

Writing is the most integrated part of his all round personality. Through writing, it seems that Pu La has keen observation of each and every part of life such as mocks , paroids,  inconsistencies and contradiction in life. He wrote a range of comedy, philosophical ,Autobiographical books.Take a glance at some of the books.

Pu La And Poetry

Pu La and Suneetabai shared a common love poetry. 'Reading poetry' was not just a pastime for them but it was a basic need. They presented a selection of the poetry of B.S. Mardhekar, B. B. Borkar and Arti Prabhu.


Pu La And Awards-Honours

  • Pu La is honoured not only by Punya Bhushan (Pride of Pune) but also by Padma Shree and Padma Bhushan .
  • In 1965, Sahitya Academy (the top literary body).
  • In 1968, Sangeet Natak Academyi award.
  • 'Bahurupi' from Maharashtra Gaurav award.
  • Pu La also received many awards from various states of India.
