Jainism

The religion founded in the 6th century by Mahavira, (around the lower Ganges plain region). Jains believe that only by achieving complete purity of the souls can one attain liberation. By purity it means shedding all Karma, matter generated by one's action which binds itself to the soul.

By following various austerities (e.g. fasting, meditation, retreating to lonely places). One can find the way to Moksha.Mahavira taught & preached to follow Truth & Ahimsa. He taught the real way to live life & devote it to the god who has given you birth. His teachings used to impress a lot of people thus people from various places used to gather to listen to him. He opposed killing and eating animals & insisted to remain pure vegetarian in order to get Moksha. The people who follow Mahavira  are called Jains.

Later on this religion was divided into two parts namely Digambars & Shwetambars. Followers of both these community  do an eight day hard core fasting in the holy week called Pajushan which comes every year seven days before the Ganesh festival.
