Pune University was established on 10 th February, 1948. It was formerly known as University of Poona. The First Vice-Chancellor was Dr. M. R. Jayakar. Located in the North Western part of Pune, the University has become one of the leading centres for research and teaching in the country. Shri B.G.Kher, Chief Minister and Education Minister, Govt. of Bombay, allotted a campus area of over 411 acres to the University.

The building formerly was monsoon residence of the governor of Mumbai when the headquarters used to be shifted from Mumbai to Pune temporarily. It is built in Italian Gothic style and is surrounded by beautiful maintained lawns and trees. It is situated near Ganeshkhind.
Initially 12 districts, the jurisdiction of the University was restricted to 5 districts, namely Pune, Ahmednagar, Nasik, Dhule and Jalgaon, after the establishment of the Shivaji University, Kolhapur, in 1964. Later on Dhule and Jalgaon districts got attached to the North Maharashtra University established in August 1990.
There are 269 colleges affiliated to Pune University. Out of which 11 are only for girls. There are 46 Academic Departments. There are 288 teachers in the University Departments and 11 Faculties.
